Overview

Mrs Wang, nestled in the heart of Canberra at FG16 A/26 Narellan Street, invites diners into an elegant homage to classic Chinese cuisine with a sprinkle of Shanghai nostalgia. Walking through the door, you are greeted by a warm space adorned in rich reds and golds, creating an intimate, sophisticated atmosphere perfect for both casual dinners and special occasions.

The menu is an enticing balance of traditional and inventive dishes. Highlights such as the Duck Pancakes and Sweet and Sour Pork showcase deep, familiar flavors elevated by flawless execution. The live seafood offerings, including steamed ginger scallion lobster and Singapore-style chilli crab, deliver freshness with a spirited kick that customers like Karen Van Gramberg have praised for their authentic punch and presentation. The kitchen’s attention to detail shines particularly in these live seafood options, where the show of presenting seafood before cooking adds a thoughtful, engaging touch to the dining experience.

Vegetarian and vegan diners are catered for thoughtfully, with sides like crisp Brussels sprouts paired with herbs and puffed rice, as well as broccolini dressed in vegetarian oyster sauce. These choices reflect a mindful approach to inclusivity without sacrificing the depth of flavor that defines Mrs Wang’s offerings.

Guests recognize the balance between generous portion sizes and quality, though some have noted that the yum cha style can feel overwhelming, especially when portions diverge from the traditional small plates expected in such a setting. This points to the restaurant’s unique interpretation of Chinese dining—bold, generous, and unapologetically rich.

Service is marked by warmth and attentiveness, with staff like Sicilia providing expert recommendations that elevate the meal, particularly when it comes to standout items such as soup dumplings. The thoughtful service enhances the relaxed yet polished atmosphere of the space.

Mrs Wang appeals strongly to lovers of authentic Asian flavors seeking a place that honors tradition but is unafraid to add a contemporary twist. It is well-suited to diners eager to explore Chinese cuisine beyond takeout staples, offering a culinary journey through nuanced textures and classic tastes. For those who appreciate a blend of ambient charm and thoughtfully crafted dishes, Mrs Wang provides a vibrant and memorable experience in Canberra’s dining scene.

Saw the posters advertising Singapore styled crab, decided to give it a go. Became members of Tiger Lane to get a discount. Enjoyed the starter of eggplant chips, best I’ve had! So crisp! Yet soft inside. It’s hard to get that balance. They came and showed us our crab before cooking it. Ordered plain rice and fried bread to eat with it. Unfortunately they ran out of rice , and had to wait til more was boiled. But they were so kind to take it off our bill. Whoever said this is more white washed restaurant, have you tried the Singapore crab. It cleared my sinuses. Could have been fried a bit less but it was very tasty. Such a good looking restaurant, all red and gold. Nice and intimate.

We passed by and saw yum cha buffet. As ‘big eaters’ who had not had yum cha for ages thought this would work. It turned out the portions are too big - for Yumcha. The best would be small portions (or each item is delicate and small) and many options so the experience would be fun to try each type but small quality. The items are so big for each dish after 3 or 4 varieties 2 dishes I was full but because there are many others to come I had to eat more - as I would not want to miss out. and turned out I am full now at 9pm. That is not optimal as you want to enjoy food not to stuff yourself but again you can’t stop after eating 4 items. The bad thing about this buffet: NO MENU is available So they bring push cart with items for you to choose So you don’t know what you will get or if you want to prioritise for items you really love to eat- this is very much the case for me - when the items I love came I was stuffed and experienced diminished utility effect. Tea was great - Jasmine and puer also complete with still or sparkling water - which helped digestion Services is not bad but as the place Is not full (every time I come a few tables of clients) there are only a few working - not possible to be always available. So this place is for REAL big eater or pls go for ala carte - choose what you love and eat just the right amount. The Kai lan stem / stalk? was very dry I could not swallow it. And as I lived in Singapore home to wonderful yum cha the dishes are very fresh generous portion but NOT authentic … Gave 4 stars as 3 would be not fair - maybe 3.5. I did go for lunch 2 times - affordable and good. One time the fried rice had some frozen peas (and I told the staff that day as a friendly feedback.) The environment is a bit too dum for me makes me feel a bit drowsy but this is very personal. If you observe the kitchen is shared with the outside Golden Duck.

Mrs Wang is a step back in time with decor reminiscent old Shanghai. The service was efficient and friendly, especially for a newly-opened restaurant. All the dishes were stunningly presented and overall, tasty. The strange eggplant was a wonderful cold starter with an interesting taste. The taro, plum and duck donut was presented beautifully with wonderful contrasting between the crunchy exterior and the soft duck inside. The fish of the day was fresh and melts in your mouth along with a nice, clean sauce. The sizzling beef with broccoli was a bit of a left down as the beef lacked marinade or a sizzling taste. The mixed vegetables also had a lot of onions in comparison to vegetables. However my favourite part of the night was the lemon meringue tart. The citrus flavours with the meringue and the chewiness of the snow fungus worked incredibly well together.

A sensational experience from start to finish, partner and I opted for the banquet for 2 and were not left disappointed by any means! Serving sizes where above generous, meals were well balanced, both food and drink service was fast and friendly If you are ordering off menu, recommend the kung pao prawn and duck pancake. 11/10 standouts. Highly recommend!!

Cute little find on our first night in Canberra. Easy to book online and a friendly greeting on arrival. Pleasing aesthetics with plenty of room between tables and very clean. We enjoyed the tasting menu and the food was well presented and flavoursome. Each serve was spaced out well, so we didn't get too full too quick. I found a new favourite cocktail called the Caspian. Service itself was great, the staff were friendly however it did take a while to get someones attention to order drinks. Still I do highly recommend a visit next time you're in Canberra

Dined here on Saturday night and the place was buzzing. The booths are super comfortable and the staff are awesome. Shout out to Adrian & Mirabel for making our anniversary night so special. Duck Pancakes & Xiao Long Bao were delicious entrees. My partner chose the vegetarian accordion eggplant for mains and wasn't disappointed, I went for the beef short ribs which were massive and really tender. The wine list had a great mix of Canberra wines and quality interstate classics. Overall highly recommend.
